The driving force behind Mot’us is the ability to progress motion and promote freedom of movement in order that we can function to our optimal capacity.
Functional training is used to describe how we encourage and promote movement in order that we can function on a daily basis in the tasks that we want or need to perform, to the highest level that we can, more easily, and without injury.
It has its origins in exercise rehabilitation and is task or context specific to help retrain the body following injury or dysfunction, or simply to perform at a higher level, more efficiently and effectively.
In many respects, functional training should be thought of in terms of a movement continuum. As humans we perform activities such as walking, running, bending, twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, standing, starting, stopping, climbing and lunging. All of these activities involve smooth, rhythmic motions in the three cardinal planes of movement – sagittal, frontal and transverse. Therefore, training should be performed in all three of these planes of movement to produce strong and specific results.
The goal should be towards achieving the optimum balance of mobility and stability throughout the body and coordinating movement as a whole functioning unit. This is achieved through utilizing full joint range of motion and producing strong yet flexible muscles in order that joints can act and react as they are designed to.
Exercises also need to be performed that help improve or increase all ten components of our skills including: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance; stamina; strength; flexibility; power; speed; coordination; agility; balance and accuracy. Different people have varying requirements for which aspects of these components are more important and therefore detailed assessments and specific program design enable individual goals to be here at achieved.
